Al Jumper, MD

Physician Advisory Board

Dr. Alfred Jumper has been practicing medicine in the Los Angeles area for nearly thirty years. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, he is the middle child of nine siblings. As a child he attended Tulsa public schools and it was there, under the guidance of numerous caring and loving teachers, that he developed a voracious appetite for reading- a passion that has served him well. It was also there that he first read about and came to appreciate the historic significance of growing up in the shadows of what some have described as the single worst incident of racial violence in American history -the Tulsa race riot of 1921. By the time that riot ended, estimates of as many as three hundred African Americans lay dead and over a thousand homes and businesses in an area previously recognized nationally as “Black Wall Street” were burned to the ground. Reading remains one of his great passions. Upon graduating high school, he spent a year at Oklahoma State University, then transferred to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Many academic awards and scholarships followed. After graduating from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelors degree in chemistry, he attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine where he received a Doctorate of Medicine degree. Dr Jumper then completed his medical training at Harvard University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts where, from 1979 -1980 he was an Intern in general surgery. Between 1980 and 1982 he completed a residency in anesthesiology at Peter Bent Brigham hospital, then served as Clinical Fellow in Neonatal and Pediatric Anesthesiology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts from 1982 until 1983.

Upon completion of his fellowship training, he moved to Los Angeles where he co- founded the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. After twenty years of service at Cedars-Sinai, he relocated his private practice to serve as Director of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Specialty Surgical Center in Beverly Hills, Ca. , where he still practices in that capacity. In his present practice, Dr. Jumper is privileged to work with three world-renowned surgeons, supporting each of their respective foundations. These are Dr. John Reinisch, who specializes in pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery, performing ear reconstructions on children born with no ears. Along with Dr Reinisch, Dr Jumper supports the Small Wonders Foundation, providing free plastic and reconstructive surgery for children who are not able to pay. Dr. Kenneth Wright specializes in pediatric ophthalmology. Along with Dr. Wright, Dr. Jumper supports the Wright Foundation which provides free ophthalmic surgery for children. Dr. David Alessi is an Otolaryngologist and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who also practices in Beverly Hills. Along with his wife, Debra, Dr Alessi directs the Face Forward Foundation. Dr Jumper is privileged to serve on the board of directors of this wonderful foundation that provides, free of charge, plastic and reconstructive surgery for women who are victims of domestic violence. He also serves as medical director of Aesthetic Creations, a skin rejuvenation and anti-aging practice owned and operated by his wife, Greta Shaw, N.P.

Maybe it’s nature. Maybe it’s nurture. In either case, Dr Jumper considers himself blessed beyond measure in that he has come to understand that giving is not something you do, giving is who you are! In every act of giving you honor those who raised you, who taught you, who love you. A life of giving is a life well spent. And while givers always wish they had done more, Dr Jumper considers his life, thus far, to have been very well spent and looks forward to more and greater gifts of giving.
